Here comes the Sun… and an EPIC scale model of our solar system! We’re zooming to the historic city of Liverpool this autumn so you can jog to Jupiter, swing by Saturn and dance around the Sun — all without ever leaving Earth.

About the Trail

Our 8.1 km scale model of the solar system will animate Liverpool City Centre from 14 October to 6 November 2022. Begin at the Sun on Church Street, make your way along the city’s iconic waterfront and Trans Pennine Trail before finishing in Otterspool where Pluto awaits.

Getting Here

The sculpture trail begins on Church Street (corner of Parker Street) in Liverpool City Centre. From there follow the inner planets along to Lord Street, continue to Albert Dock to find Jupiter and follow the Trans Pennie Trail along the city’s iconic waterfront to find Saturn and Uranus all the way to Otterspool Promenade where Neptune and Pluto await.

Opening Hours

The trail is available to view every day. For the best experience, we recommend visiting between 9am and 7pm.

Public transport

There are excellent public transport links to and from Liverpool and around the city. Plan your journey using the Mersey Travel website.

If you are travelling to the city centre by car use the council's website for more information on parking facilities.

On The Trail

Space can be pretty big! To help you navigate your way around the solar system, maps will be available for free from our Trail Guardians and Stewards at the beginning of the trail on Church Street, highlighting the route.

Before you jet off on your interplanetary journey, take a look at some of the important points to note:

Where do I start my journey?

Start your journey at Church Street in the centre of Liverpool (W3W link) where you can zoom from the Sun to Mars. Follow our signage to the waterfront, pass by the Museum of Liverpool, and catch Jupiter next to Tate Liverpool before enjoying the Waterfront all the way to Pluto at Otterspool. The end of the trail is a short walk to either Aigburth or Cressington stations where you can hop on the train back to the city centre.

What’s the terrain?

The trail is located along existing roads and footpaths and is accessible to prams and wheelchairs.

How long is the trail on foot?

From the Sun to Pluto is 8.1 km. At an average walking speed, the complete trail will take up to 3 hours.

Can I travel by bike?

Yes! The trail is fully accessible to bikes. Be careful as you journey through space and follow rules for dismounting in busy areas or at narrow points.

Should I bring anything?

You might want to bring a snack or a drink to stay hydrated as you journey to the outer planets. You will also want to download our handy app to stay informed and entertained.

Toilet Facilities

Toilet facilities are available at various venues along the route, including public facilities at Liverpool One on Wall Street and at Royal Albert Dock.

We want as many people as possible to have an enjoyable experience on the trail. The trail is located along a public walkway and is accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs.

Check back soon for our full accessibility audit.

Download Trail App

Our augmented reality app will enhance your visit along the sculpture trail. Track your steps through the solar system, collect space souvenirs, upload a star to the 'Universe of Us' and learn all about the solar system during your visit — download the Our Place in Space App via Apple or Google Playstore here.

A packed programme of events and creative education programmes will take place across the city. More details will be announced soon.

COVID-19: Information for visitors
